Verbatim Theatre: Interviewing asexuals

I decided when creating this piece that I wanted to use stories from real asexuals. I got this idea from reading an asexual perspectives book, and I thought it would appropriate when talking about asexuality as a whole to feature other peoples not just my own. To achieve this, I plan to interview some asexual people I know on the struggles and positives of being asexual and the experiences they have been through. Using these interviews, I will create voiceovers and have other people record their words, so their identities are anonymous. Also, I will be giving my own experiences of my asexuality, and I’m not sure if going to voiceover mine yet.

Asexual Research

To create this performance I needed to research into my own asexuality to make this accurate as possible and as real as possible. Below are sources I used to explore this:

  • Asexual Visibility Education Network
  • Different sources on Youtube
  • Asexual Perspectives – Book – Interview with asexual people
  • Asexual and Proud – Book – Interviews and historical background
  • The Invisible Orientation – Book – Goes over in detail the struggles of asexuals and the history
  • The Lonely Ace Of Hearts – Book – History of asexuals

Using these sources it has helped me come to develop my script and where i will move forward. I learnt facts on asexuality through these texts such as the percentage of asexuals alive today and the struggles they have faced. It was interesting to read interviews where i could relate to them and I’m sure this will be included in my performance.

Well bugger me its been awhile….

I think you may have got the impression by looking at the time differences between this post and my last one that I am terrible at doing regular blog posts. I was told it is like Facebook imagine you are on that. Unfortunately, I hardly use Facebook so that analogy didn’t really work for me. But surrrprissse! I’m back so hold on to your hats and be prepared for my documentation of the process. Because it has been awhile, I thought I would give you an overview of crucial decisions I have made.

  1. My show is called In The Plus and focuses on the topic of asexuality
  2. I will be using techniques such as physical theatre, projection and relaxed comedy
  3. I will have so much cake
  4. I made a colossal prop (which I will post after my show just in case of spoilers)
  5. Writing a script is hard. But this script includes facts, my opinions and interview

Seriously sorry its taken so long for you to have anything, but, I went on an exhibition to Antarctica you see, to find the legendary cake penguin. I had no luck. But from now be prepared for an overload of material on how I got to the stage I’m at now.

Until the next time I post which will be in a couple of minutes! Time me! The pressure is on!
