Asexual video creation: The use of iMovie

I decided to include further use of multimedia in my piece in the form of film footage. My film I have created is collaboration of asexual videos of people facing struggles. Below I will include how i made this video on iMovie and the videos/audio I sourced. Enjoy.

Sorry it is blurry but this i swear is my editing. Screenshots don’t really work. Damn it. Whoops.

In The Plus Script (Version 2)

Below is version two of my script In The Plus with some major changes and some smaller ones. Enjoy.

Solo Peformance Script version 2

Firstly in this draft, I shorted the start of my show when I go over the analogy for what asexuality is. I had four projected silly examples, and I thought that was overdoing the joke, so I reduced it to just the poet and oil paintings. It was a small change, but I believe more effective on stage.

The most significant edit to the script I have made is the inclusion of a monologue after the voiceovers. It voices my struggles as an asexual and is the only time I talk about myself in the piece. At first, I was reluctant to include it, but after much thought, I decided it needed to be covered as I as an asexual person talking about asexuality, not at one moment had I ever talked about what it feels like. I go over the struggles of finding out my asexuality and the happiness and proudness I feel. It’s a raw emotionally driven ending to the show, and I hope on stage it will effectively produce an image for the audience after I have built a connection throughout the show.

In this draft, I also started to consider the scenery and staging if was in the addition of projection or taking it away. But also on how I would light the piece. I made decisions on spotlights and having the flag lit on the stage.

Originally I planned to have the ending of my show having the audience joining me on stage to decorate a cake to bring it full cycle and end on a high note. However, this was time-consuming, and unpredictability of how long this would take unfortunately meant I had to cut this from my version one script and instead end on handing out the bracelets. This was a tough decision but one that needed to be made.

Verbatim Theatre: Interviewing asexuals

I decided when creating this piece that I wanted to use stories from real asexuals. I got this idea from reading an asexual perspectives book, and I thought it would appropriate when talking about asexuality as a whole to feature other peoples not just my own. To achieve this, I plan to interview some asexual people I know on the struggles and positives of being asexual and the experiences they have been through. Using these interviews, I will create voiceovers and have other people record their words, so their identities are anonymous. Also, I will be giving my own experiences of my asexuality, and I’m not sure if going to voiceover mine yet.

Asexual Research

To create this performance I needed to research into my own asexuality to make this accurate as possible and as real as possible. Below are sources I used to explore this:

  • Asexual Visibility Education Network
  • Different sources on Youtube
  • Asexual Perspectives – Book – Interview with asexual people
  • Asexual and Proud – Book – Interviews and historical background
  • The Invisible Orientation – Book – Goes over in detail the struggles of asexuals and the history
  • The Lonely Ace Of Hearts – Book – History of asexuals

Using these sources it has helped me come to develop my script and where i will move forward. I learnt facts on asexuality through these texts such as the percentage of asexuals alive today and the struggles they have faced. It was interesting to read interviews where i could relate to them and I’m sure this will be included in my performance.
